Drinking and St. Patrick's Day: Need a source?

Quebec will be going green and all Quebecers will be Irish at the annual St. Patrick's Day parade on Sunday, March 20. St. Patrick's Day has always been a time for fun and, more often than not, drinking is part of the celebration. Some, however, raise a glass (or more) too many, ruining the party.

For the last three years, Éduc'alcool has been partnering with the United Irish Societies of Montreal to make moderation a hallmark of the holiday, and the organization's Director General, Hubert Sacy, is available to talk on a number of related topics, including the following:
  • How to get home from the parade in one piece, including a stop at the pub: Eat a bowl of Irish stew before the parade, drink plenty of water between glasses of Guinness and plan activities the following morning, for example.
  • What Éduc'alcool is doing to promote moderation on parade day: Survival Guide, pennants, the Éduc'alcool squad, and, for the first time this year, a parade float promoting the low-risk drinking guidelines – all adding a healthy dose of awareness to the fun.
  • Drinking limits for special occasions: Why you may occasionally - and how many times a year – have more than the usual limit of 2 drinks a day for women and 3 for men.
  • Standard drinks: A standard glass of Guinness (340 ml) and a shot of good whisky (45 ml) are the same, in terms of alcohol content, on St. Patrick's Day or any other day.
  • Drinking and driving: Most instances of impaired driving are the sad conclusion of prolonged bouts of drinking. Why?
  • Mornings after: How to avoid them and how to treat them.

Plus all other topics related to drinking and its consequences.
