Maple Leaf Foods (MFI:TSX) today launched a formal Animal Care Commitment that articulates the principles, goals and actions the Company is taking to become a leader in animal care.

"This requires building a strong culture of animal wellbeing, advancing continuous improvement within Maple Leaf and across the industry, and holding ourselves accountable for performance and progress. We will provide the necessary organizational focus and resources, with a steadfast commitment to advancing the humane and science-based treatment of animals." Maple Leaf Foods will enhance animal wellness practices in a manner consistent with the Five Freedoms, the most widely accepted global standard for responsible animal care. They include: freedom from hunger or thirst; freedom from discomfort; freedom from pain, injury or disease; freedom to express normal behaviours; and freedom from fear and distress. These will be advanced through the following four pillars of its Animal Care program:
